Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative side when she was a young girl because of her Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could devote her days to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay immediately fell in love with that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the arts can serve to engage people. Her mother was also a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay to express herself via the medium of art. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and brought up. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, would later inspire her to make a film about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied in the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to look-out and search for the house for a specific juror. In the course of her work, she became dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the business of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight out of college as a junior publicist at the studio that was small. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. In addition to PR, the company created several lifestyle networks such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
